The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.
There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Perth.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.
"We know that time is getting short and various factors at play, not just his injury, but further aspects," he commented.
"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."
Past Concerns
The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.
The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.
He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.
Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
